Candy is Demonic?

Every October, the question circles again… what do Christians do with Halloween? Some say avoid it. Some say embrace it. But maybe the real answer is to redeem it.

Ephesians 5:11 tells us to “have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness.” It doesn’t tell us to run from the world, it tells us not to participate in what’s evil. That’s a big difference.

My kids love dressing up—Buzz Lightyear, Elsa, little mermaid, and j think this year, it’s going to be Dwight and Angela from the office! And honestly, those moments of laughter and candy collecting have become a sweet family tradition. But as a dad who follows Jesus, I’ve learned to use those nights as teachable moments. We talk about how there really is darkness in the world, but how Jesus’ light always wins. We skip the creepy, haunted stuff and lean into what’s good, creative, and joyful.

What if trick-or-treating became more than candy? What if it was a mission moment? You can meet your neighbors, smile at strangers, and be a quiet witness that Jesus’ people aren’t afraid of the dark. Because the dark doesn’t stand a chance when light shows up.

This Halloween, don’t be scared of the day… redeem it. Be intentional, be joyful, and remind your kids that the One who lives in them is greater than anything in the world.
