Who’s Sitting at Your Table?

You ever notice how Jesus didn’t let just anyone into His inner circle? Sure, He loved everyone. He healed crowds, fed thousands, and welcomed the broken. But when it came to His everyday life… His table, His travels, His prayers, He chose twelve. And even within the twelve, there were three (Peter, James, and John) who saw the most intimate moments of His ministry.

I used to think that being a good Christian meant saying “yes” to everyone. Every hangout, every group chat, every friendship that wanted my attention. But I learned the hard way that not everyone who claps for you is for you. Some people drain you, distract you, or quietly pull you off mission.

When Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm,” that’s not poetic advice.,. it’s a survival guide. Who you walk with shapes who you become.

I remember a season when my circle was filled with people who were always complaining… about work, relationships, church. And before long, I found myself doing the same thing. Negativity had become contagious. Then one day, God gently reminded me that even Jesus withdrew from the crowds to pray. He didn’t isolate, but He did choose carefully.

Your circle doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be purposeful. Surround yourself with people who speak life, who challenge you toward Jesus, who pray with you when you’re hurting, and who celebrate your wins like they’re their own.

Maybe it’s time to take inventory. Who’s sitting at your table? And more importantly… does your circle pull you closer to Jesus or further away from Him?
